Distant King, who provided Gerry Kelly with his first winner on the Flat in 11 years as a trainer when winning at Beverley last month, returns to the Westwood tomorow with excellent chances of obliging again.
The five-year-old bids for the G.R.I.Y. Handicap and boasts a fine chance of adding to his scoresheet.
Since opening his winning account at Beverley, Distant King has scored at Carlisle, staying on strongly inside the final furlong to beat Young Ben by a neck.
Sandwiched between his two wins was a respectable display at Hamilton, where his chances were not helped by him losing a shoe.
For Gerry Kelly to have a horse like Distant King is something of a rarity. The Sheriff Hutton trainer usually has the most moderate of animals under his care, horses incapable of winning a race. Indeed, Gerry's only previous training success in more than a decade before this gelding came along was achieved by Referral Fee in a bumper at Catterick.
Distant King, who is owned by Tony Barratt, a builder, who lives near Beverley, will be assured of a warm reception if he can deliver the goods again tomorrow. Adrian Nicholls, in the saddle at Carlisle, again has the mount.
New trainer Kevin Ryan has seen several of his horses run well since he took over the reins at Hambleton Lodge stables last month, and Richard Fahey's former head lad can register his first success with Cool Prospect in the featured £10,000 49's Great Yorkshire Show Handicap.
Cool Prospect ran a solid race at Redcar a fortnight ago when chasing home the much improved Ray Of Sunshine (winner before and since) over six furlongs. Stepping up in distance tomorow, Cool Prospect can make the most of his light weight.
Brian Rothwell has his horses in good form and the Musley Bank trainer can land the Cattle Lines Claiming Stakes with Detroit City.
Formerly trained by Jack Berry, Detroit City scored for Rothwell at Musselburgh at the end of last month, making all the running and staying on well to beat Italian Rose by one and a quarter lengths. He can show his rivals a clean pair of heels here with Micky Fenton again taking the mount.
Peaceful gave notice that her winning turn was not far away when finishing a promising runner-up at Ripon last Monday. Tim Easterby's juvenile can go one better in the Turnstile Maiden Auction Stakes.
Younico may not be one to rely on totally, but Mark Johnston's charge, successful at Catterick recently, has strong claims in the John & Angela Barley 30th Wedding Anniversary Handicap.
Younico swished his tail and wandered badly across the course throughout the final furlong of his Catterick victory, suggesting he may have his share of his temperament. But he also has the ability as this three and a half lengths win would suggest, and he is awarded the nap vote in a soft race.
At Brighton make a note of the promising Ghita (2.00) and the in-form Priory Gardens (4.30) for a first-and-last race double.
