CRICKET

Thirteen-year-old Mark Mierzwinski is proving a real hit on the Yorkshire cricket scene.

The Easingwold School pupil, who already has representative honours to his name, has just scored his first century, 103, in a match against Bootham.

And his talent has recently earned him a call-up to the Yorkshire Schools Under-13 team, for whom he opened the bowling in his first match against Cumbria.

Last year Mark captained his school's Year 8 team to the final of the Calypso Cup at Headingley and also captains the Hambleton and Richmond Area team. He plays for the North Yorkshire Under 13s and his club teams include Huby and Sessay.

Such is his talent that he is not re-stricted by his years - Mark plays regularly for Huby's men's team, even opening the batting for them, and also turns out for Sessay Under-16s.

But in the years to come he may have to decide between cricket and his other love, football. Mark is a talented centre back and last season had trials for Sheffield United.

Easingwold School's PE teacher, Jonathan Marwood, believes Mark has all the credentials to go a long way in either sport. He said: "He's a very level-headed lad. He's somebody that listens - he wants to learn."

York and District Schools' U13s beat Scarborough Schools by eight runs at Scalby. York were 115 all out from their 25 overs, top scorers were David Marshall 22, Nadim Sadiq 15 and James Wreglesworth 29.

In reply, Scarborough faced some tight bowling, especially from Jonathan and David Marshall.

York's next game is against Bradford Schools on Wednesday, July 8, at York Civil Service's ground in Boroughbridge Road. Players meet at the ground at 12.50pm for a 1.30pm start.

York and District squad: N Briggs (Barlby), J Gibbon (St Olave's), N Sadiq, M Callaghan (Fulford), J Wreglesworth, R Suekarran (Millthorpe), P Mitchell (Manor), J Marshall, D Marshall, A Walton (Tadcaster), R Hall (Bootham, M Dyson (Lowfield).

English Martyrs Roman Catholic Primary School's football team has beaten off competition from all over the region to win a top award.

The Year 6 team has been awarded the TB Robinson Memorial Cup by the York Schools' Football Association as the team of achievement for 1997-98.

Last year they won the Year 5 league and this year won their section of the Year 6 league, reaching the league final where they lost to Kingsway. They have also picked up the Parent Teachers Association Cup and won the Primary Knockout Cup when they beat Carr School in the final at Bootham Crescent.

The award goes to English Martyrs for the first time.
