Visitors to the Castle Museum in York will be able to get to grips with history this weekend and experience what life was like for a soldier more than three centuries ago.

They will have the rare opportunity to handle 350-year-old helmets and try on authentic armour from the Civil War period.

On Saturday and Sunday the museum, with the help of Sir Thomas Glemham's Regiment of the Sealed Knot, will recreate what life was like for the soldiers and civilians in York when the city was under siege.

"The idea is to give visitors literally a feel of the period," said the museum's curator of military history, Keith Matthews, who will be on hand to talk to visitors.

"Recreating history in this way is both entertaining and educational."

The Sealed Knot, wearing full period costume, will be in action between 10am and 4.30pm on both days, demonstrating how the Royalists defended York Castle against the Parliamentarians.
