Yorkshire Cricket by David Warner

Michael Vaughan shaped a century right out of the Geoff Boycott mould to stop Yorkshire from crumbling in the championship match against Durham at Riverside yesterday

The opener never once lost his patience in compiling an unbeaten 118, first saving Yorkshire from the follow-on and then taking them to 235-8 by the close when they were still 102 runs in arrears.

Vaughan has a good chance today of becoming the first batsman to carry his bat for Yorkshire since 1985 when Boycott achieved the feat for the eighth time in his career.

This was the fifth consecutive innings in which Vaughan has completed his 50 but the first occasion this season that he has gone on to his century.

His first 50 took him 86 balls and included four boundaries, but his second 50 required a further 139 deliveries to which he added only two fours.

Off-spinner Nicky Phillips, partnered by Melvyn Betts, continued his marathon spell when Yorkshire resumed their first innings innings today.

Vaughan's 118 was already Yorkshire's highest individual score of the season, and he was soon adding to it although Sidebottom was fortunate to make his ground before Michael Gough's throw hit the stumps.

Yorkshire were 240-8 after 95 overs and needed a further 10 runs to secure a second batting bonus point.

Yesterday Yorkshire left-arm paceman Paul Hutchison was warned for the third time in the match for running on to the pitch during his follow through.

There was no option for captain David Byas but to take him off and call on Gavin Hamilton to complete the over.

Hutchinson said later: "I will start the second innings with a clean slate. I don't anticipate any problems. It is just a case of getting my run-up right."
