A DISTRAUGHT couple are appealing for help in the search for their dog which went missing four days ago.

Retired miner Alvin Newbert and his wife, Christine, say they cannot sleep at night since their black Labrador, Ellie, disappeared on Wednesday morning while chasing a hare.

The couple, of Cedar Cottage, Main Street, North Duffield, near Selby, have had the seven-year-old pedigree since she was a puppy.

A tearful Mrs Newbert said: "It's a living nightmare. Ellie is a loyal, affectionate and friendly dog - absolutely gorgeous and we think the world of her.

"We sit up most of the night, hoping she's going to scratch at the door to come in. It's like losing a member of the family, we're heartbroken."

She said the dog was not wearing a collar or any identification because they didn't want to spoil her beautiful coat.

Ellie disappeared on Wednesday morning while out walking with Mr Newbert, 57, a former miner at Whitemoor Mine.

They were near Menthorpe Lane, North Duffield, when Ellie took off in pursuit of a hare and has not been seen since.

Neighbours, friends and local farmers have been helping in the search, along with pilots at nearby Breighton airfield. Mr Newbert said: "She loves water and might have swam across the River Derwent to Bubwith.

"It's not knowing what has happened to her which is the worst part."

Anyone with information is asked to call the Newberts on 01757 288979.
