A worker at the old ABB carriageworks site in York was taken to hospital after his hand was caught in an hydraulic press.
Firefighters were called to Holgate Road, where the American-based rail freight company, Thrall Europa, is building wagons for English, Welsh and Scottish rail companies.
It took fire crews from Tadcaster, Acomb and York 20 minutes to free the trapped man using cutting equipment.
The man, who had been carrying out maintenance work, was taken by ambulance to York District Hospital with a hand injury.
General manager Jim MacFadyen said he was still waiting to hear the results of X-rays from the hospital and trying to contact the man's wife.
"After the man was released he was able to walk to the ambulance," he said.
"He was a bit shocked to begin with but he seems to be over that now and is having his hand X-rayed at the hospital to see if any damage has been done."
