KEITH Richardson has set a Clifton Cycling Club veterans' record.
The 63-year-old covered the fifty miles in Holme Valley Wheelers' event on the A1 at Dishforth last Sunday in 1hr 59min 09sec, an 11 second improvement on John Lewis's record set in 1973 when he was 42.
The event was won by P Smith of Border City Wheelers in 1hr 45min 11sec.The fastest York rider was VC York veteran Tony Stott, fourth in 1-47-09. His club colleague Caroline Sherlock finished in a time of 2-17-33.
Ian Cooke won Selby Cycling Club's 10 mile open time trial last Sunday, completing the Escrick-Barlby course in 21min 08sec, which was six seconds ahead of joint runners-up Laurie Holmes (Morley CC) and race favourite Adam Hardy (Leo RC).
Times of other North Yorkshire riders were -Selby: K Holmes 23-29, A Gill 26-53, R Durham 24-49, A Walsh 24-28; Clifton CC: K Norman 28-30, K Scully 24-53; VC York: D Dale 24-14.
Clifton's Colin Hawxby made it two wins in two rides in last week's Thursday Evening League event, a 10 mile time trial on the A64.
He recorded 20min 48sec on a near perfect night. Chris Peate was second, in 21-12. Clifton's Rob Osman was third, in 21-18, his fastest ride since he set the club record in 1996.
Junior Tom Ford (Knaresborough RT) made a brilliant debut in the USP Brands Cycle Racing League by winning the ten mile event held on the Great North Road between Boroughbridge and Wetherby.
Ford, 17, from Asenby, near Ripon, clocked 23min 52sec in damp conditions The runner-up was his team colleague Matthew Miller (York), who was 47 seconds behind. Mike Youngson (Knaresborough CC), the 1996 league champion, was third a further 38 seconds back.
Bishopthorpe's Jim Laycock (Knaresborough RT) was the fastest veteran, timing 28min 52sec. His 14-year-old son Graham was the best juvenile (under 16), clocking 29-07, to maintain his lead in the juvenile points competition.
A Knaresborough RT squad of York riders Nigel Goscinski, John Clarke and Matthew Miller along with Harrogate's Colin Clark, competed in the Cleveland Wheelers 60 mile road race at Middlesbrough.
Goscinski finished 12th after being in the thick of the action, and veteran Clarke was 18th. The Harrogate man retired with 10 miles go. Miller, from Rawcliffe, could not engage his lower gears on the climbs and eventually climbed off.
Veteran Tony Stott (Velo Club York) came fourth in the Holme Valley Wheelers open 50 mile time trial on the Dishforth-Catterick course.
His time was 1hr 47min 9sec, beating his previous best at the distance by over six minutes. He finished less than two minutes behind winner Peter Smith (Border-City Wheelers), whose time was 1-45-11. Ripon-based soldier Keith Murray finished third, in 1-46-20.
Veteran Mike Storey, of Scarborough Paragon CC, came seventh in the Holme Valley Wheelers open 25 mile time trial the Dishforth-Knayton and back course. His time was 54min 01sec.
Clifton Moor rider Steve Gore-Browne (VC York) was 10th, clocking 54-26.Former British women's best all-rounder Elaine Ward (Scarborough Paragon) won the women's race on the same course in a time of 58-07.
Five times Ackrill Cycling League champion Lloyd Jones was surprisingly beaten in the latest event in this year's series. His Knaresborough CC clubmate Mike Youngson, the 1996 champion, denied Jones his fourth win of the series.Youngson covered two laps of the hilly Plumpton circuit, a total distance of 17 miles, in exactly 40 minutes to add to his victory of the previous week.
Jones, who was runner-up ten seconds behind Youngson, leads the series with 120 while Youngson has 115.
Richard Heath won the Transco (Yorkshire) Handicap Road Race League race over eight laps of the Newby Hall circuit, a distance of 28.5 miles.
The runner-up was Strensall cycle dealer Phil Brighton. Richard Sutcliffe was third, inches ahead of his brother Oliver.
Tom Ford (Knaresborough RT) and Matt Bailey (Team Chevin) of Boroughbridge, were fifth and sixth respectively.
Transo Road Race League organisers are to try a revolutionary course on Tuesday for the seventh round of the series.
Starting at the same place as Marton 10 mile time trial course, riders will race south on the old Great North Road (A168), turn on Walshford traffic island, then head north to Aldborough Gate traffic island where they go south again to complete a 15 mile circuit. Riders have to cover two laps of the circuit, starting at 7pm.
