POLICE pulled a fatally- injured motorist and his seriously hurt woman passenger from the wreckage of their car after it hit an 11,000-volt electricity pylon in one of a series of Bank Holiday dramas on the region's roads.
Officers went into the car despite fears that the stricken pylon could topple on to them.
Many neighbouring villages were left without power as a result of the crash on the B1249 Driffield to Langtoft road.
Police say that before the accident, which happened at 1am yesterday, a police van saw the Calibra car being driven erratically. The officer signalled the vehicle to stop, but it continued to drive at speed.
The vehicle was seen again some minutes later by another patrol car. Police say they believe the driver did not even see them, but they witnessed a large blue flash and went to the rescue those in the car.
The driver, Andrew Moorhouse, 25, of Brook Street, Driffield, was pronounced dead at the scene.
His passenger, Teresa Shepherd, 36, also of Brook Street, was taken to Scarborough Hospital, where her condition today was poorly.Police say the recovery of the damaged vehicle was made particularly difficult because live wires from the electricity pylon had to be made safe by Yorkshire Electricity before the vehicle could be moved.
Meanwhile, police arrested a man following a road rage incident in which a driver was hit by another motorist.
The incident started on Saturday afternoon on the A64 eastbound carriageway near Colton.
Police say the dispute carried for three miles as the driver of a maroon Toyota Landcruiser pursued the driver of a dark-coloured VW Golf.
He tried to get away, but the offender continued until both vehicles stopped at London Bridge Service Station, where the driver of the Landcruiser allegedly headbutted the other driver. He received minor injuries, but was not taken to hospital.
A man has been released on bail pending further inquiries.
Police are appealing for anyone who saw the incident to contact them at Fulford Road Police Station on 01904 631321.
A mystery pedestrian was killed when he was struck by a car as he crossed the A64 Scarborough to York road near Seamer, Scarborough.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to York District Hospital and was treated for shock.
The dead man is believed to be aged between 20 and 30, 5ft 8in tall with short dark hair and was wearing a dark blue shirt, black trousers and black shoes.
