The National Railway Museum in York was today celebrating a £155,000 gift to help improve access for visitors with wheelchairs and pushchairs.
The museum was handed the cheque from Railtrack at the 1998 White Rose tourism awards ceremony, in which North Yorkshire entries swept the board.
The cash was handed over as the NRM accepted the "tourism for all" award for its past efforts in improving access for its visitors.
The £155,000 will pay for a new lift to make the balcony gallery accessible to wheelchair users and families with baby buggies.
It will also cover the cost of new automatic doors which were recently fitted at both the museum's entrances.
Nicholas Pollard, of Railtrack, said: "Big business has a responsibility to give something back to the community and Railtrack is no exception. The work at the National Railway Museum is a perfect example of what we are trying to achieve.''
The NRM has also been awarded £10,000 from the Association of British Sponsorship of the Arts, it announced today.
