Premiership giants Manchester United have been so impressed by young York players that they want to have a second look at their talents.

David Beckham was among the spectators when the York lads played trials at United's Cliff training ground.

Leeds United and Sheffield United have also asked York lads to return for more trials.

The York youngsters are all products of Premier Soccer School, a York-based advanced coaching set-up run by Graham Vickers.

Many junior clubs in York and District as well as wider afield in North Yorkshire recommend their star players to attend the sessions Vickers and his coaches run.

"What I am to do is to give them good quality coaching and if they work hard the lads will benefit," said Vickers.

"There is no guarantee that they will go on to greater things but they all get good coaching."

One of the main coaches who assists Vickers is former Huddersfield player Billy Legg.

Premier Soccer School has recently taken youngsters at a number of age levels from under-10s to under-14s to Manchester United's training ground at Cliff, as well as Leeds United, Sheffield United, Nottingham Forest and Scunthorpe.

"Manchester United's youth coach Eric Harrison liked the standard of the York youngsters so much that he has asked us to go back," said Vickers. We have not got a date yet but it will likely be in August."

The York under-10s who went to Leeds were so good they drew 3-3 against a very strong United side in a seven-a-side game played over one hour and three York players have been invited back.

They are Brendan Ledgeway (Rawcliffe), Robert MacQuarrie and Liam Quirk (both South Milford).

Nottingham Forest want to take another look at Nathan Milner (Brooklyn). Along with several other York players he is also returning to Sheffield United this weekend for second trials.

At under-13 level Milner, Martin Corr and Mick Hutchinson (both Hamilton Panthers) are going back to Bramall Lane tomorrow (Saturday, May 16). Other under-13 players who went to Sheffield recently are: Dale Waddington (Wigginton), Tom Vasey (Wigginton), Mark Mirzwinski (Easingwold), Kevin Oxendale (Brooklyn), David Coxon (Rowntree).

At under-14 level Adam Groom and Ian Calpin (both Hamilton Panthers), Daniel Low (Harrogate) and James Pringle (Huby) go back to Sheffield tomorrow. Others who went recently to Bramall Lane were: Matthew Fannon (no club), Darren Paul (Middlesbrough) and Calum Mackay (Tadcaster).

Under-nines who went to Sheffield were Michael Warriner and James Ellerby (both Rawcliffe). Under-10s: Robert MacQuarrie, Brendan Ledgeway, and Wigginton pair Michael Vickers and Michael Down. Under-11: Paul Lawrence (Rawcliffe) and Darren Brandon (Heworth). Under-12: James Goodman (Copmanthorpe).

Four under-12s players are due to go to Scunthorpe United for junior trials: Andrew Brabbs (New Earswick), Darren Fox (Rawcliffe), James Goodman (Copmanthorpe) and Sam Farthing (Tadcaster).

Vickers is running a basic soccer coaching course from May 27-29 at Lowfield, Burnholme, Huntington, and Stamford Bridge schools.

The course costs £20 for the three days and is open to boys and girls from ages five to 14. The following week there will be a three-day basic coaching course at Riverside School, Tadcaster. For full details ring Graham Vickers on York (01904) 766334.
