Super League exile Mark Hewitt today pleaded with York Rugby League Club to help get his career back on track, writes Stuart Martel.

The prolific scrum-half told the Evening Press he vowed to quit the professional game after first division champions Hull Sharks left him in the wilderness.

The 24-year-old was rejected by the Humbersiders despite scoring 312 points to spearhead the Sharks' promotion to Super League and their Divisional Premiership run to an Old Trafford final.

But Hewitt was determined to resurrect his career at Huntington Stadium, starting with the Wasps' friendly with Leeds Rhinos tomorrow night.

"All I want to do now is start playing rugby. I have not played a match since Old Trafford. I know what I can do. I have got nothing to prove to them (Hull)," he said.

"I think I was good enough to play in Super League in that team. I would have had to fight for my place, as I always have. Leeds will be a big test for us. But it is all about playing the best.

"They are all world class players but I am sure we will put up a good performance against them. York have got decent players."Hewitt was hopeful that he and Hull prop Jon Aston would sign one-month loan deals tonight, in time for the Leeds game.

"Hopefully, it will come off so we can get playing and trying to get York out of the second division. Dean has given me a chance and I have got to repay him."
