DOG lovers are desperately needed to step in at the eleventh hour and save the lives of six homeless hounds.
The strays were rounded up in York by dog wardens but could soon face being put down unless animal lovers can offer them new homes.
Gill McGregor, animal health officer for the City of York Council, said every stray dog was given a seven day "stay of execution".
"But these are already well over that time limit," said Mrs McGregor. "We are absolutely desperate for someone to give them a home."
The homeless dogs include a lurcher, a Jack Russell terrier, a German shepherd, a whippet and two collie-type dogs. All are said to be fit and well and house trained.
Mrs McGregor said any person willing to offer one of the dogs a new home must be at home for most of the day to care for the animal."It is their last hope," she said. "It is very sad and we hope someone will come forward."
Anyone willing to give any of the dogs a new home can contact Mrs McGregor, or fellow animal health officer Jane Metcalfe, on 01904 551530.
