by Albert PattisonPAUL Miles hit a splendid unbeaten half century to steer Dunnington to victory in the final of the Costcutter Indoor Cricket League's Knock Out competition victory over Wilberfoss coming in the 11th over.

For Wilberfoss, John Myers made 45 and David Gilbertson 21, but the villagers threw caution to the wind and were bowled out for 95 with 17 deliveries to spare.

Good bowling then kept Wilberfoss in the game with Kevin Davison, in particular, proving to be extremely economical, only conceding seven runs of his three overs. However Miles then struck 22 off the tenth over and had made 50no when he and David Simpson, who was 17no, gained the winning run off the first ball of the penultimate over.

Wilberfoss were involved in three out of the four games. Their first game was the outstanding quarter final tie with Selby which saw them win comfortably after Selby had been bowled out for just 60 due to three run outs and a 2 for 13 spell from Tony Nicholson.

John Myers 27no and Dave Gilbertson 20no then saw Wilberfoss home by three wickets with four overs to spare. The two most fancied sides then met in the first semi-final with Dunnington batting first against Clifton Alliance. Neil Wilson cracked a rapid 26no and, with Dave Simpson making 25no and Darren Avey 22, Dunnington reached 111-3 despite a tight three-over spell from Mick Pickering.

Clifton's batting then fared badly as Jonathan Simpson took 2 for 10 and only Mick Jackson reached double figures, making 34 before he was last out at 77 in the tenth over.

Stamford Bridge batted first in the second semi-final and made a useful 109-4 against Wilberfoss with Tim Larmour making 25no, Ian Fraser 23 and Jonathan Stevens 22.

Wilberfoss were then given a sound start by Kev Davison 27no and Dave Gilbertson 25no and, with John Myers making 23, they earned a place in the final with a four-wicket victory with one over to spare.

l The death has recently occurred, at an early age, of Stuart Watkinson, who played for Bedale throughout the 1980s and represented the league on a number of occasions.

He hit four first division centuries between 1980 and 1984, including an unbeaten 126 in a memorable game when Bedale beat Sessay after Brian and John Flintoff had each made centuries as their side totalled over 250 for no wicket.

Stuart scored over 500 runs in a season on a number of occasions, with his best being 644 runs at an average of 33.89 in 1982.
