YORK City Baths Club swimmers are hoping to bag a haul of medals at the Yorkshire ASA championships in Leeds this weekend.
Robin Francis is hoping for a hat-trick of gold medals in three 16-year age group events. Francis has also entered the men's 100m freestyle, which brought him a bronze medal last year, and the 200m individual medley.
Sarah Jamison competes in the 400m individual medley and will be hoping to do better than her third position last year.
The York interest in the women's 100m backstroke lies with Amanda I'Anson, but only a top form swim will get her into medal contention.
Richard Harris is the favourite for the 14yrs 100m butterfly, but may have to settle for a minor place in the 200m individual medley.
Another 14yrs competitor, Rachel Harlow, is also entered for two events and could take both the 100m backstroke and the 200m individual relay. Medal hope Laura Priest is also down for these two events and Marie Walker is well seeded in the 12yrs 100m breastroke. Meanwhile York swimmers were in good form as they competed in the City of Leeds 'Multi Nation Meet' which incorporated the third round of the Speedo British Grand Prix. Eight finalists and four 'B' finalists took two gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
York's Olympian Caroline Foot was first in the women's 100m butterfly with a time of 1:03.43 and was second in the women's 50m butterfly with a 29.23. She was fractionally beaten by fellow Olympian Sue Rolph. Foot was seventh in the women's 200m butterfy final with a 2:24.49. She goes into the Grand Prix Super Final to be held in Sheffield on May 29-31 as the leader in the butterfly for the ninth year running.
Twenty-year-old Matthew Grant clinched a superb victory in the men's 50m butterfly with a time of 26.94 for his first Grand Prix victory.
Scottish senior representative Mike Cole took the bronze medal in the men's 200m individual medley with a time of 2:08.09, just 1.01 seconds outside his personal best time. He just missed out on a medal in the men's 400m individual medley with a time of 4:34.43. Cole was fifth in the 'B' final (ninth to 16th place) of the men's 200m breaststroke in 2:36.57. He has now left for South America to compete in Rio for Great Britain at the Swimming World Cup.
YCBC men's captain Phil Potter put in a gutsy performance to snatch the bronze in the men's 400m freestyle with a time of 4:07.17. He just missed out on a medal in the men's 1500m freestyle with a time of 16:20.21. Potter was eighth in the 'B' final of the men's 200m freestyle with a time of 2:03.01.
Mandy I'Anson was fourth in the 'B' final of the women's 50m freestyle with a 28.65 and 14-year-old Katy Sunderland was eighth in the 'B' final of the women's 50m butterfly with a 31.73.
