QUEENSLANDER Justin Aldershaw has jetted into York Rugby League Club intent on making his mark on the English game.

The ambitious Aussie was recruited by Wasps coach Dean Robinson on a month- to- month basis after pleading for a chance to prove himself at Huntington Stadium.

Aldershaw was last year voted the Northern Territory player of the year and starred in a club game against Sheffield Eagles, while the Super League side were Down Under for the World Club Championship last July.

Robinson confirmed the 21-year-old, a loose forward or second row, will make his debut in Sunday's friendly fixture at Barrow Border Raiders.

"He is only in his early 20s and wants the chance to show himself in England. It suits me and him for him to have that chance here at York," said Robinson.

"He actually contacted me and said he wanted to be given a chance and would I accept him. At the moment we are taking it on a month-to-month basis but I believe we will be making something permanent if he goes as well as I hope he will.

"He has a mature attitude for his age and takes his football very seriously. He has been playing in competitions that are on a par with our first division."

The signing of Aldershaw takes York's current overseas contingent to four, with the loose forward joining fellow countrymen Matt Lambert, Lyle George, and Jeff Woodward at Huntington Stadium.

The Wasps coach declared it would be a great bonus for the club if Aldershaw emerged as a force in the second division.

"I am hoping we have unearthed a gem and if that proves to be the case it is another bonus. I have brought people to the club who I am certain can do a job," he said.
