YORK Women's losing run continued in Division One of the North League when they lost 1-0 to Sheffield at York University.
York, who have lost more than half their first team squad through injury, retirements and job moves, played with a good deal of spirit but seldom looked like scoring. Their best effort came in the second half when an angled drive from Nicky Perkins was well saved by the Sheffield 'keeper.
The visitors had more of the play but also lacked ideas in front of goal, failing from several penalty corners and were often thwarted by a determined York defence.
It was a surprise when they did score, ten minutes from time, Alison O'Malley tapping in from close range to secure the points.
In the Premier Division of the Yorkshire League, York II lost 5-2 at home to Bradford II, Dawn Hopkins and Rachel Messias scoring for York.
There was better news for York in the York and District Costcutter League as they beat Stamford Bridge 3-2, all the goals coming in the second half.
Bridge opened the scoring with a penalty flick, but York levelled when Becky Copperthwaite followed up a rebound from a Liz Ashton shot.
Bridge regained the lead, Gay Walker netted York's second equaliser, and five minutes from time Ashton flicked home a cross.
The drama was not quite over as York goalkeeper Helen Harvey made a brilliant save to deny Bridge a draw.
Acomb Ladies took another step towards the Yorkshire League division three title with a 3-2 win against third-placed Slazengers, and with three league games to go Acomb are unbeaten.
But they fell behind to a Slazengers penalty flick after a sluggish start in which 'keeper Kirsty Cooper made several good saves.
After half-time Acomb forced Slazengers back and the breakthrough came when Liz Wilson was brought down as she was going towards goal and Kerry Rafton converted the penalty flick.
Acomb took command and after a string of short corners, Vicky Winter's reverse strike putting the league leaders ahead.
Sally Kelsey then rounded the goalkeeper to make it 3-1 before Slazengers pulled a goal back in the dying minutes.
