JEANETTE Coulson, of York Indoor Bowls Club, is through to the English Women's Indoor Bowling Association national finals in two events.
She has qualified for the singles and triples finals at Potters Leisure, Hopton-on-Sea near Great Yarmouth. The national finals start on Wednesday, February 25.
In the singles zone two final at Blackpool Borough Coulson scored heavily between the 11th and 17th ends to recover from a 9-1 deficit against Cumbria's Eleanor Gass.
A four, two threes and two twos put Coulson into the driving seat with an 18-11 advantage. Scores from that point were all in singles as both players produced some excellent heads and it was the 25th end before Coulson could claim victory 21-16.
The following day Coulson and her York club colleagues Lynda Parker and Helen Walker travelled to the Cumbria club for the zone two triples final and beat Blackpool Newton Hall trio Beverley Trask, Sue Kearsley and Barbara Rawcliffe.
Rawcliffe was the skip who had destroyed York in the Yetton Trophy, but this time Coulson's threesome built an 8-1 lead after six ends.
Rawcliffe fought back to 7-8, but the York trio produced the most significant score of the match, a five, and with two more scores led 16-10 at the 14th.
It was a rearguard action from them on as the Blackpool trio fought tenaciously for every point. Parker, Walker and skip Coulson were happy to be 16-15 up as the game closed on the 18th.
Scarborough's Kath Broadbent and Pam Miller beat Carol Bamber and Denise Foulds (Blackpool Borough) 31-10 in the unbadged pairs final. With the exception of a single four, all the Scarborough duo's scoring was done in clusters of three, of which there were four in all. Ryedale's Lyn Metcalfe, Margaret Roberts, Doris Freddi and Betty Stubbings could not make it two national finals appearances in a row.
They suffered one bad patch in the zone two fours final when not scoring throughout the second quarter of their match against Blackpool Borough's Di Hunt. Metcalfe's quartet had the better of the second half until they dropped a four on the penultimate end before losing 20-17.
There was no joy either for York's Maureen Walker, Melanie Brooks and Pat Wilson in the over-50 two wood triples. They lost 19-9 to Cumbrian opponents Jackie Wilson, Pat Corps and Kath Baxter.
The zone two pairs final was the best of the lot, Cindy Edmundson and Eleanor Gass (Cumbria) beating June Lockwood and Anita Owen (Barnsley) 23-21.
Sylvia Waudby of North Cave recovered from being 7-1 down to beat Jackie Wilson (Cumbria) in the zone two Champion of Champions final.
A three on the 13th gave gave Waudby the lead for the first time. From 10-8 it was a long and strongly fought contest taking 26 ends for Waudby to win 21-15.
The zone two winners going to the national finals are:
Singles: J Coulson (York); Pairs: E Gass, C Edmundson (Cumbria); Triples: L Parker, H Walker, J Coulson (York); Fours: J Cooper, M Mallinson, P Barker, D Hunt (Blackpool Borough); Unbadged Pairs: K Broadbent, P Miller (Scarborough); Over-50 Triples: J Wilson, P Corps, K Baxter (Cumbria); Champion of champions: S Waudby (North Cave); Under-31 singles: M Mooring (York), S Watkinson (Barnsley).
The evergreen Tom Delaney is through to the last 32 of the national over-60 singles championship. He beat his club colleague Dudley Williams 21-17 in the area final. The score was 10-10 at halfway but Delaney clinched victory with a three on the 24th end.
