EDUCATION chiefs in York are facing a second parent rebellion over secondary school admissions - but this time over its current policy.Angry parents of children at Heworth CE Primary School claim their youngsters have been denied a place at their chosen secondary school come September.Within hours of finding out education bosses had vetoed their hopes of sending their 11-year-old daughter, Sophie, to Fulford or Millthorpe schools, Jim and Anne Taylor had their house, in Elmfield Avenue, valued by estate agents. They say they will move to get Sophie into the school of their choice.Ironically, the row has erupted in the midst of a controversial council review of the current admission arrangements to secondary schools. Of the 16 youngsters due to leave the primary school this year, Mrs Taylor said at least 10 had been offered places at Archbishop Holgate's School - despite it figuring way down on parents' lists of preferences.Sophie too has been offered a place at Archbishop Holgate's, but the Taylors say they will appeal claiming their daughter is being used by the council to help fill empty places in a handful of its schools. The couple hoped Sophie would gain a place at nearby Huntington School - a school bus pulls up outside their house - even though their home lies just yards outside the catchment area.Mr Taylor said: "Travelling to Archbishop Holgate's would be treacherous."Millthorpe School is on the other side of the city but the couple also stated a preference for it because their house lies within its catchment area.Mr Taylor said: "The Government talks of giving parents freedom of choice but at the end of the day there is no choice."
