YORK RI Rugby Union Club broke their club record when they hammered Hornsea 110-7 in North East Three at New Lane.

The 17-try rout was led by winger Paul Rimmer who touched down four times. Four players - skipper Jon-Paul Wong, Carl Neary, Jason Westwood and Phil Ambler scored two tries apiece.

Ambler finished up with a personal haul of 35 points by converting 11 of the tries and kicking a penalty goal.

Other tries came from Matt Bentley, Stuart Lewis, Geoff Russell, David Moore and John Alexander.

RI chairman Brian Hutchinson said: "No one can remember us ever scoring more points in a match. We were leading 50-0 at half-time and we managed to keep our positions and our shape and kept doing the right things."

The result leaves RI in third spot and they are backing themselves to win their remaining league games.

Hornsea are the whipping boys of the division and it is the second time this season they have conceded over 100 points, but they did turn up with a full compliment of 15 - which is more than York managed to achieve on Saturday.

Struggling York were unable to raise a side to fulfil their North Two home game against title-chasing Blaydon.

That gifted two points to Blaydon, whose secretary George March said: "It is not the way we like to win league points. We also need the match points that we would hope to gather against weakened sides."

Injuries and 'flu prompted York, whose players had a clear-the-air meeting last Thursday to discuss their recent slump in form, to call off the match.

York, who have lost their last seven games, had started the campaign in great form, winning their opening four league games, but are now in the lower half of the table.

Injury-hit Harrogate slumped to a 26-15 defeat at Reading which leaves them third from bottom with nine points above Lydney (six points) and Morley (four).

Harrogate made a great start with No 8 Jeremy Hopkinson opening the scoring after a rolling maul with Dan Clappison adding the conversion to give Harrogate a 7-0 lead.

But Reading reduced the arrears after 15 minutes with a Lee Fanning try. Jason Dance missed the conversion, but went on to punish Harrogate's mistakes by booting seven penalty goals.

Chris McClarron scored Harrogate's second try with Neil James adding the conversion, but it was too late for 'Gate.

Ripon hung onto to a 13-12 win against Selby in North East Division Three after Selby's goalkicker Ray Adamson narrowly failed with a late penalty attempt which would have given his side victory.

A Peter Warters try and a conversion and two penalties by Roger Dawson gave Ripon a 13-0 advantage, but with eight minutes left Selby staged a great revival with tries by Craig Maxwell and Adamson, who improved his own touch down, but shaved the wrong side of an upright with a late penalty attempt.

Pocklington, second in NE Three, thrashed Hartlepool TDSOB 55-15, running in eight tries from Rob Jackson (2), Denzil Styche, Neil Hill, Mike Cox-Hill, Ben Connolly, Andy Richardson and Gary Pearce, who also slotted over six conversions and a penalty.

In Yorkshire One, Malton and Norton lost 35-22 at Wath, whose full back Pete Armstrong kicked all 19 of their first half points. Both props, Tom Eddy and Steve Riddolls, scored Malton's tries with Andy Newsome kicking the rest of their points.

In the same division, winger Neil Elliott scored two tries as Northallerton whipped Ilkley 42-5.

While York RI were going on their points spree in Yorkshire three, rivals Wetherby lost ground when they went down 18-9 at Stocksbridge, Simon Martin kicking all of Wetherby's points.

Knaresborough collected a victory in Yorkshire Four when opponents Edlington and Wickersley called off their Yorkshire Four encounter.

Nestle Rowntree beat their Yorkshire Five visitors, Adwick-le-Street 30-22 with fly half Steve Varey scoring two of their five tries. The Rowntree second string, the Lions, chalked up their first ever victory over Thirsk with a try by lock Phil Roberts and an Ivor Jackson penalty against a converted Gary Smith try for Thirsk.

Ship Inn Marauders beat Baildon Extra 'A' 17-7 on Knavesmire, centre Steve Godfrey (2) and winger Chris Harkus scoring tries for Ship, Angus Smith adding a conversion.
