A YOUNG mum and her 10-year-old daughter were killed when their car was crushed by an articulated lorry on a busy stretch of road near Stamford Bridge.

The woman lost control of her high-powered Citroen Xantia as she drove along the A166 towards Full Sutton, smashing headlong into the oncoming HGV, less than a mile from the road's Full Sutton turn-off.

A second female driver, who was travelling behind the car on the road to Bridlington, managed to swerve her convertible Renault sports car into a ditch to avoid collision and she escaped with minor injuries.

The lorry driver, who also escaped serious injury, suffered from shock but was not taken to hospital.

Police erected road blocks near the scene diverting traffic along back lanes past the nearby Full Sutton high security prison, following the accident, which occurred at around 4pm, yesterday. Although officers are yet to name the victims, it is believed they were from the Liverpool area. According to Inspector Ken May, of Humberside Police, the woman - said to be in her early 30s - was travelling away from Stamford Bridge when the collision occurred.

"Somehow the car has gone out of control and just ploughed into the front of the truck. Both the woman and the child on the back seat probably died instantly," said Insp May.

"It is a very tragic accident since two people have died - it is particularly tragic because one of them was a child.

"Obviously we will be doing full examinations of all the vehicles involved to find out exactly what caused the collision."

Officers investigating the incident are appealing to passers-by and other motorists who may have witnessed the collision.

Anyone with any information should call PC Steve Lamswood of Beverley Police on 01482 597900.
