SCARBOROUGH manager Mick Wadsworth could well face a disciplinary charge after referee John Brandwood ordered him from the touchline to a seat in the stands.

The incident came during a tempestuous first half, when Steve Wood, the scorer of Macclesfield's second goal, appeared to many people in the ground to be offside.

He was standing on the line and touched in a Steve Payne shot when there was no need to make contact with the ball.

Due to the tight confines of the Moss Rose ground Wadsworth was in close contact with the referee's assistant, who called the attention of the referee to something that had been said.

The referee confirmed after the game that he would be reporting Wadsworth for what is alleged to have been swearing at the referee's assistant.

Wadsworth claimed his innocence saying "I never swore at him, but I did express my disappointment at one of his decisions."

Macclesfield had taken the lead through John Askey just a minute before this incident when he reacted quickest following a corner which wasn't cleared, to head over a stranded Andy Rhodes.

Rhodes had kept a rampant home side at bay almost single-handedly, making brilliant saves from Stewart Whittaker, Neil Sorvel, Neil Howarth and Efetobore Sodje.

Scarborough, facing sun, wind and slope, were often over-run and the third goal duly arrived with a 25 yard effort from Howarth just before the break.

Scarborough had not helped their cause when Troy Bennett appeared to lash out at Martin McDonald a few minutes before this goal and although contact appeared to be minimal, there was no doubting the intent.

Bennett and McDonald had shown a dislike for each other earlier, but Bennett's lack of control was inexcusable, but in truth by this time, the match was lost and Macclesfield's unbeaten home record was not to be challenged.

Wadsworth completely reshuffled his ten men after the break. Ian Snodin was substituted at half time, after having to have stitches in a gashed foot.

Paul Conway and Gary Bennett pushed up and their height certainly put pressure on the home defence.

Macclesfield seemed to lose ambition and Scarborough had their best spell of the game with Steve Brodie claiming hand-ball against Sodje before he got his reward.

Bennett and Brodie inter-passed neatly and the little striker was unceremoniously chopped down by Howarth.

Gareth Williams, who had started the game at left back, calmly took the spot-kick to score his 13th goal of the season.

Macclesfield always looked dangerous when they gathered themselves and Rhodes kept out another Whitaker effort. Shots from Wood and Phil Power hit the woodwork.

It was clear that the Scarborough players felt the atmosphere intimidating although their lack of control was of concern.

Wadsworth said: "Very few teams gets anything here but this is only a blip and we stay on course for the play-offs."
