GARNWIN, apparently laid out by Nicky Henderson for a specific crack at the Pertemps Great Yorkshire Chase, can lift the £30,000 showpiece race at Doncaster tomorrow.
This eight-year-old, brought along steadily this season, has had only one preparatory outing but performed with enough promise to suggest he can play a starring role in this major production.
Garnwin made his seasonal reappearance over a distance just short of two and a half miles on this course last month and finished a highly creditable third behind Potter's Gale and Speaker Weatherill, both of whom were race-fit.
Garnwin meets Speaker Weatherill again tomorrow and, with the benefit of his latest outing under his belt and a 3lb pull in the weights, is fancied to turn the tables on Owen Brennan's prolific winner.
Mary Reveley, who has twice won the 'Great Yorkshire', is double handed in her bid to complete a treble. The fact that stable-jockey Peter Niven is aboard Random Harvest and not prolific winner Son Of Iris is a hint worth taking, and his selected mount should not be underestimated.
Linton Rocks, from a stable in cracking form, is another for consideration in a fascinating race. But Garnwin with Mick Fitzgerald in the saddle, is fancied to take all the beating.
The £15,000 River Don Novices' Hurdle, the main supporting race to the Great Yorkshire Chase, looks best left to Native Charm.
Charlie Morlock's mare has improved for each of her outings this season and turned in a good performance at Windsor on New Year's Day when winning impressively from Skycab. She has half a mile further to travel tomorrow but should stay the longer distance.
Dana Point, a model of consistency, gets the nap vote in the Maneline Easywormer Handicap Hurdle.
A winner over this course and distance in December, Sue Smith's gelding has since finished second at Market Rasen and Wetherby, where he found the concession of almost two stones to the useful Caulker more than he could handle. Well worth another chance, Dana Point can get back into the winning groove here.
Cumbrian Challenge failed to do himself justice at Ascot last time but Tim Easterby's high-class gelding, previously unbeaten in four races at Wetherby this season, should not be left out of calculations in the Napoleans Racing Mansion House Handicap Chase.
At Cheltenham, See More Business can prove himself a genuine Gold Cup contender by capturing the featured £25,000 Pillar Property Investments Chase.
A most gallant winner of the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day, when he showed more determination than Challenger du Luc in a thrilling duel from the final fence, See More Business is fast becoming a seriously good horse. And with his trainer Paul Nicholls, who had two winners at Wincanton yesterday, in tip-top form the eight-year-old can oblige under the excellent Timmy Murphy.
The Butterwick Kid, a recent winner of a Flat race on the sand at Southwell for Richard Fahey, travels from Ryedale to contest the Cheltenham and Three Counties Race Club Novices' Handicap Hurdle. A winner over timber at Hexham this versatile performer deserves attention under Norman Williamson.
Up at Ayr, the third meeting to stage televised racing tomorrow, armchair punters should make a note of the progressive Radical Choice (1.15), the front-running Caulker (1.45) and triple winner Linden's Lotto (2.15).
