OF course councillors need to get to meetings on time ("Why councillors need parking perk", Letters, July 4).
After all they have vital over-development schemes to wave through, huge greenfield housing estates, high rise flat schemes, the ludicrous Barbican (Galloway's dome), the trashing of historic buildings and, let's not forget, crazy transport initiatives to implement, all of which will create even more traffic chaos for York residents.
Given the vital nature of such work why stop at free parking passes? Let's have councillors whisked through the city's streets in a Blair-style motorcade with all traffic halted to ensure a clear passage.
The serious point is, if Councillor "two cars" Vassie would take time off from lecturing the people of York on their modes of transport he might be able to consider his own.
If he enters York from Wheldrake on the Hull Road he could avail himself of the Grimston Park & Ride site, the city council's preferred mode of transport for us mere mortals forced out of the city centre at wallet-point by the Lib-hypocrites' parking taxes.
As with many recent issues in York the only politicians to emerge from this tawdry squabble over councillors allowances and perks are the Green party councillors.
