I read with interest the article on the local transport plan proposals (Moving into the future?, July 16). I have never read such a load of rubbish in my life.
As a regular user of the A1237 bypass, I can count on the fingers of no hands the number of pedestrians I have seen and on the fingers of one hand the number of cyclists.
It is time for the city council to stop quoting its lies, damned lies and statistics and give us some real facts and figures.
When it talks about percentage increases, what does this mean exactly? Does a five per cent increase mean from 20 to 21?
Yes, I do walk and I do cycle. But what is the cost per cyclist of the money spent on facilities for them?
If we are going to charge motorists for travelling into York, are we going to charge cyclists for the provision of cycle lanes?
Let's consider some percentages of my own. It now takes me 300 per cent longer to get into York than it did five years ago due to cycle lanes, bus lanes, traffic lights, right turn lanes which are three feet wide and 18 metre-long Park & Ride buses totally unsuitable for York roads.
These buses stop the traffic and cause tailbacks down Tadcaster Road every day as they turn left from the middle lane on Blossom Street. I would estimate that the extra pollution caused by the queue of cars behind them is far more than that saved by them.
So come on, people of York - let's tell the council what we think of its plans as we sit in a traffic jam watching the cyclists trying to avoid committing suicide under a bus in a bus lane full of cars.
Philip Robinson,
Orrin Close,
York.
