BOOTHAM School pupil Joe Tindale is king of the York chess castle after winning the city Under-13s tournament.
The youngster pitted his wits against talented opposition in the York City Chess tournament held in the busy Parliament Street thoroughfare and he came out on top to receive a shield and medal from the Lord Mayor, Coun Janet Greenwood.
Bootham teacher David Robinson said: "Joe is a fine and promising player who beat some very strong opponents."
Chess has been played at the school for at least 40 years and success in the pastime has deep roots - a 19th century former pupil, Edward Coleman, went on to become chess champion of Western Australia.
