NORTH Yorkshire hotelier Phil Smith, who was celebrating his first winner on Knavesmire a fortnight ago with Ski Jump, will be back for more of the same tomorrow.

Trained by Richard Fahey at Malton, Nap selection Ski Jump contests the Patrington Haven Leisure Park Handicap and has every chance of adding to his recent success.

The five-year-old got home by a head from Sunday Symphony on that occasion, a victory which thrilled his owner, who has the Parsonage Hotel at Escrick and who also runs a building business.

Ski Jump, who last month finished fourth at the Royal Ascot at York meeting, will relish tomorrow's step-up from a mile and a half to one and threequarter miles.

Fahey has taken the trouble to reduce Ski Jump's weight by booking Mark Johnston's talented 7lb claimer Greg Fairley for the mount.

There is a total of only 49 runners in tomorrow's six York races and that was after the entries for the 3.05, 3.40 and 5.20 races were re-offered this morning.

The total of runners is low because of a number of factors, including the ground and the large amount of racing being staged this summer.

The HSS Hire Handicap is the principal race on the card, and Danehill Willy could be the one to be on. Neville Callaghan's charge has won his last two races. He came from an impossible-looking position at Epsom to gain his latest success. A 3lb penalty may not be enough to prevent him notching a hat-trick.

Sprint specialist Milton Bradley is fancied to take the hss.com Handicap over five furlongs with Bluebok. The four-year-old has been in good form and looks set to register his third success of the summer. Ironically, one of his main dangers is likely to be his stablemate Salviati.

At Newbury, Mumbling can land the John Guest Brown Jack Stakes. Brendan Powell's seven-year-old tends to come to himself at this time of year. Handily weighted here, he will have the services of Richard Quinn as he bids to gain his first success of the campaign.

Bonus should not be overlooked in the Hardy's Handicap over six furlongs. Although it is some time since he last won, this talented sprinter would surely have gone very close at Lingfield last time had he not been hampered in his run from the rear after patient riding tactics. Jimmy Fortune has the task of producing him at the right time tomorrow.
