HAVING read the recent articles and letters regarding proposals for the Arc Light Centre, concerns seem to smack once more of NIMBYism and fears born of ignorance rather than fact.

No doubt if this service wasn't allowed to exist or expand in our city, the same individuals would be complaining about "down and outs" littering the streets of York.

My experience from living near the present facility is that it is a professionally-run establishment providing a vital service for homeless people. If it wasn't for the sign above the door you would be hard pressed to realise such a hostel existed there.

I regularly pass the 24-hour Arc Light Centre and can assure all concerned that the surrounding areas are kept spotless. It is very rare that you encounter its residents, who never cause any fuss or disturbance.

As for the arguments against other potential locations - surely, the main entrance way to the National Railway Museum can be no less busy or unsuitable than Clifton or any other proposed site? Have you heard the museum and its customers complaining?

Crime concerns are not borne out in police statistics or from my own experience. I would have no qualms about the centre continuing in its present location on Leeman Road.

However, if the centre needs to move to improve, then it's a shame that some York residents cannot be more open minded and willing to support those less fortunate than themselves.
