"IT'S been a remarkable year". That's how Archbishop Holgate's School head John Harris described the last 12 months - a year which has seen top exam results, partnerships and new opportunities.
Speaking to parents and pupils at the annual speech day at the York school, Mr Harris said he hoped "another school record" was on the cards as GCSE results were awaited from the current Year 11 pupils.
He said the school's results and success did not "just happen". He said: "They're about hard work, high expectations, very high staff commitment and the strong support of parents." Mr Harris also praised the commitment and dedication of staff at the school, which was also named one of the first 24 Science Colleges in the country during the year.
He said pupils were also prepared to make the most of the education opportunities at the school.
He said: "A remarkable year...but we're determined not to be complacent. We know how important it is to keep, at the heart of the school, those features that make Archbishop's a special place to be part of." Mr Harris said the school had a clear vision, which embraced a caring environment with "maximum achievement".
The special guest at the speech day were the Rt Rev Robert Ladds, Bishop of Whitby, and Sir Cyril Taylor, chairman of the Specialist Schools Trust.
Sir Cyril told the audience: "John Harris and his outstanding staff and teachers have transformed the school. Today it is one of the leading schools in the country."
