WELL said Ian Humphrys ('Open your mind', Letters, July 25).
More than a year ago I was asked to show residents of the Arc Light Centre how to operate the gumbuster machine in the town centre. My first reaction was of total horror. How wrong I was.
They were the most polite group of individuals I have ever encountered, eager to work and very conscientious. Granted, they have had their problems with drink and drugs, but there I go but for the grace of God.
Over the past year I have got to know them and I have to admire their honesty when they talk openly and frankly about their past problems.
It certainly puts my life in perspective.
One of the individuals found a cloth bag containing more than £1,000 on a bench in King's Square a fortnight ago while gum-blasting. Did she spend it on drink or drugs?
No, she handed it in.
How many others would have done the same?
I understand people being concerned but let's remember two things that seem to be getting overlooked.
Firstly, Shipton Street School is one of a few sites being looked at, and secondly, the residents of the Arc Light Centre are there because they have asked for help.
What about all the addicts out there who don't want the help?
