COLOURSCAPE is on the move in York and spreading its butterfly-beautiful wings around North Yorkshire, with three new structures and seven new locations.
From tomorrow, the York Colourscape Music Festival has a new home in Rowntree Park, leaving behind the Museum Gardens for a fresh life of colour, light and music. "The new setting gives us more space for a new larger structure," says festival co-ordinator Simon Desorgher.
Colourscape's inflatable walk-in sculpture will be in York from tomorrow until August 7, open daily from noon to 5pm.
"This giant sculpture is a network of many highly-coloured chambers linked by elliptical openings to form a breathtaking experience of the potentials of colour and space illuminated by natural daylight," says Simon.
"Visitors wear cloaks of primary colours that change in hue as they move through the intensely coloured chambers. Each visitor walks freely, choosing from the many routes through Colourscape, experiencing endless views of radiating colours, and many people are moved to express their experience in poetic terms."
In addition, Simon is introducing a new ColourDome and Tube, not only in York but also in Helmsley, Scarborough and Northallerton.
"ColourDome is a brand-new walk-in experience, where you can explore a transparent dome and colour tubes and chambers, with live musicians inside," says Simon. "It will appear in city and town centres, each day moving to a different place in North Yorkshire, and appearing in York city centre this weekend in St Sampson's Square and Coppergate and next Friday at the Eye of York, from noon to 5pm."
ColourDome's diary of locations and musical activities will be:
Tomorrow: St Sampson's Square, York; Richard Durrant, guitar, performing Music From The ColourDome.
Sunday: St Sampson's Square, York; Linda Merrick, clarinet, playing contemporary British music, plus mime artists and computer music.
Monday: The Tube, Coppergate, York; your chance to enter the giant Tube to hear flute and computer sounds spiral and bounce around you as if seated inside a giant flute.
Tuesday: ColourDome, Helmsley Market Square; Martin Mayes, French horn and Alphorn.
