I have to agree with PJ Markwick (Letters, 29 July) that speed control measures such as cameras and speed humps will not deter many drivers from exceeding the speed limit.
However, I'm not so sure about his suggestion to reduce the engine power. I own a vehicle which, according to the handbook,
is capable of a top speed in excess of 120mph and yet I have no difficulty in complying with the 30 and 40 mph speed limits in force on Lawrence Street, Hull Road, and elsewhere.
My training with the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has instilled in me a respect for speed limits and a sense of self-discipline which effectively controls the pressure applied by my right foot to the "loud" pedal.
Unfortunately, there are far too many drivers on our roads today who seem to feel that compliance with the regulations is for softies only.
Until such time as they are prepared to accept their responsibilities and do something to curb their behaviour, we will continue to have accidents such as those highlighted in the Evening Press this week, and the residents of Hull Road will still be taking their life in their hands every time they cross
the road.
