IN response to Mrs Taylor's letter about the suitability of the new gym at Oaklands Sports Centre for disabled people (July 25), I am happy to confirm that the needs of disabled people have been considered early on in the planning process.
Once completed, the centre will have dedicated parking areas and toilets for the disabled.
The reception will be easily accessible by wheelchair and the gym has been located on the ground floor.
As for fitness equipment in the gym, we are now looking at the ranges available from five different suppliers, all of whom have equipment suitable for disabled people, including wheelchair users.
While the final decision will be taken by the Oaklands Project Board, there will be a period of discussion with the local community to ensure their needs are considered in the operation of the gym.
This may take the form of open evenings, user forums and discussions with community groups.
The contents of Mrs Taylor's letter have been noted, but if anyone else would like to be involved they should pass their contact details on to Oaklands Sports Centre on 01904 782841. Comments from local residents will be very important when considering the final selection of the equipment because it is intended Oaklands Sports Centre will become a fully accessible leisure centre, which can be used by all sections of the community.

Acting head of facilities, sport and active leisure
