NOW all the congratulations, backslapping and praises have been meted out for the success of Royal Ascot week, there was one very black spot I hope will be addressed should York have the good fortune to host Royal Ascot next year.
In 1939 the now "old folks" of this city left their homes and loved ones and went to war, made munitions or tilled the land so the present day citizens could enjoy their Royal Ascots. The old people should have two days "meals on wheels" each week but, for some reason, they didn't get them during Ascot week.
Some were offered frozen meals, but they didn't have freezers, so no luck there.
The meals do not cost £1.50 as they do for school children, oh no, they are £2.30 and some leave a lot to be desired.
I am 79 and my friend who delivers with me is 77. We deliver to the Burton Stone Lane area, Shipton Street, Baker Street, Horner Street and Newborough Street.
Winnie Starkey,
Tang Hall Lane, York.
