Alistair Domville came within touching distance of two bronze medals at the Cerebral Palsy World Games - but just missed out on both.
The New Earswick bowler, who turned 21 yesterday, travelled to America for the major international championships with hopes of emulating the bronze he won at Nottingham four years ago.
But a combination of tough competition and a switch from the usual indoor to outdoor greens left him a step away from the podium.
He said: "I had a fantastic time, even though I missed out on the medals. At least I did get one at the last world games in Nottingham.
"It was also a new experience in that we were playing on outdoor greens and I'm an indoor bowler so many of the others had an advantage."
The bronze play-off in the pairs ended 16-15 with Domville on the losing side, and in the singles, he agonisingly missed the cut for the semi-finals on shots difference.
Two from each group of four went through to the next stage but with three on the same points, Domville (pictured above) was left with the knowledge that had he beaten the world champion 21-13 instead of 21-19, he would have been in the mixer for the medals.
Domville, who extended his thanks to all those who helped him raise £1,500 sponsorship for the trip, said of the experience: "It was good to be in America and see a different country, especially as that's one that everyone always talks about."
Next up for the Next Generation employee is the national pairs in Nottingham, where he and Elaine Hunter from Scotland will be doing their utmost to retain their gold medal.
He said: "We're hoping it will be adopted as a Paralympic sport - especially by 2012.
"All I can do for now is keep winning and do well in all the competitions."
