DOWNHILL mountain biker James Risker is a man who is clearly not afraid to live up to his name.
The 21-year-old from Wykeham, who races as part of York's Team Bike Outlet, is riding high on the downhill scene and recently recorded a gutsy race win at Oswestry.
The white-knuckle sport which pitches riders in one direction - down - over rocky, forest and hilly terrain is rapidly growing among thrill-seekers with the York team currently running four racers.
Risker topped off a season of top-three placings with the win at Malfrey Hall in Shropshire, Dave Parkin-Coates came down in 17th out of the 38-strong field and team leader and Bike Outlet owner Alex Weston was 22nd.
Junior prospect Pete Rogers had to withdraw after the practice run due to a bike problem.
The team turn their attentions closer to home in the next few weeks when they host the Bike Outlet Downhill Extravaganza at Wykeham Forest on September 4.
Hundreds of spectators are expected for the event, which combines a one-kilometre track, including an 18-foot road jump with a sideshow of stalls.
Practice starts from 8am to 11.30am followed by junior heats and final, a seeding run for the seniors and the main event starting at 4.30pm.
Expansion is on the cards from next season and Weston is keen to speak to companies looking to sponsor the squad. Anyone interested can call on 01904 692807.
