IT'S a car fit for a king. So the appearance of this classic Jaguar at York Racecourse - home of the Sport of Kings - was the perfect way to launch this year's showpiece Ebor Festival.
Knavesmire's most glamorous occasion may have had to play second fiddle to Royal Ascot at York this year, but there was due to be plenty of style and substance when festivities kicked off today.
Continuing a trend started at Royal Ascot, a champagne lawn next to the bandstand can now be found outside the weighing room. There will be bars and catering in the southern lawns and there will also be more viewing space by the course parade ring. More giant screens have also been brought in.
Tens of thousands are expected to turn out during the three days of action - the highlight of which is tomorrow's totesport Ebor Day.
York Racecourse has applied to vary its alcohol licence, which will allow drinks to be sold and consumed on the new lawn.
Racegoers are being reminded that some elements of the traffic masterplan which kept York free from gridlock during Royal Ascot will be in force.
Crowds will be smaller at the Ebor festival than during the Royal Ascot meeting and John Smith's Cup Day, but fine weather could see the Ebor Day crowd tomorrow top more than 30,000.
Entry to the racecourse will be by the A64 only and there will be some temporary closures of some local roads during peak traffic hours. For more details, log on to City of York Council's website at www.york.gov.uk or telephone the race traffic information helpline on 01904 552200. To book tickets, either telephone 01904 620111 or log on to www.yorkracecourse.co.uk. Badges can be bought on the gate and there is availability in both Grandstand and County Stand.
