YORKSHIRE paid a high price in the Roses match at Old Trafford yesterday for the absence of fast bowler Chris Silverwood who could not take the field because of a hamstring strain.
Deon Kruis stunned Lancashire at the start of the third day by grabbing three wickets for as many runs in 21 balls but later on Silverwood was badly missed as the other bowlers tired and the home side were able to post their highest Roses score of 537, overtaking their 509-9 in 1926.
This gave them a first innings lead of 120 but it had been reduced to 49 when bad light ended play five overs early with Yorkshire on 71 without loss.
Silverwood's injury also rules him out of the squad for tomorrow's Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy semi-final clash with Hampshire at the Rose Bowl.
Yorkshire will not call up a replacement for Silverwood but, Ian Harvey, recovering from a broken thumb, could be brought into the party at any time today before the team coach sets off for Southampton.
Harvey had the splint taken off his thumb this week and yesterday he had a net at Old Trafford to test his fitness but he remains doubtful.
The day began with Lancashire on 243-2 and captain Mark Chilton out for a career-best 130 before a run had been added. He aimed to glance Kruis and was taken down the legside by Ismail Dawood.
In Kruis's next over, Stuart Law wafted outside off-stump and was caught behind and when Australian left-hander Marcus North sliced Kruis to Craig White at gully, Lancashire were 250-5.
But Andrew Symonds and Dominic Cork then steadied Lancashire with a 116 stand in 32 overs which ended soon after lunch when he hooked at Kruis and lobbed the ball high to leg gully where Matthew Wood took the catch running from slip.
Kruis soon had Glen Chapple caught by Anthony McGrath at second slip and Yorkshire stole another trick at 397-7 in 129 overs when Kruis bowled a maiden to Warren Hegg to deny the opposition a fifth batting point.
But after that there was very little reward as Australian Symonds moved to his third century in as many Championship matches since joining Lancashire.
With Yorkshire reverting to part-time bowlers, Lancashire pushed on and Symonds scored his 37th first class century off 169 balls with 12 fours and a six.
The stand galloped on to 137 in 26 overs, beating by three runs Lancashire's previous Roses best for the eighth wicket between Chris Maynard and Paul Allott at Headingley in 1986, but Bresnan finally broke through as Symonds cut hard to Lumb at point and was out for 146.
Anderson provided Bresnan with his fourth wicket when he was caught behind and the innings closed when Hegg reverse swept Richard Dawson straight into Jaques' hands at slip after making 68.
Wood survived some hostile bowling from Cork while Sayers held firm at the other end, Wood closing on 32 and Sayers on 26.
