AT long last York is getting its recycling scheme fully operational. But, of course, there are a few who are determined to upset this process by making their mind up that it will be a failure before it begins and then trying to convince the rest of us about this.

Martin Hayton, B K Lawson and Stewart Harrison: you may not like the idea of having to change your routines (Letters, August 19), even if it is for the good of you, your neighbours and the rest of the world - but come on! At least give it a go before (if you will excuse a pun) rubbishing it.

Although I am in no way involved with the York recycling scheme I helped set up an almost identical project in a Midlands borough council and, guess what, it all worked out fine.

I'm not saying there won't be any teething problems but, if other cities can do it so can we. Don't tell me that York can be out-done.

As for B K Lawson's final statement that if he gets a garden bin delivered he will dump it in the street, is that really going to solve any of our city's waste problems?

If anyone receives a garden bin by accident, just ring up the council and politely ask them to remove it so someone with a garden can use it.

Some may say that their bins will overflow. Well, get into the spirit and recycle more, or buy items with less packaging.

I don't want to hear "why should I change my habits?" We all should, if that is the only price of saving our environment. Let's pull together and get the scheme up and running and make our city a cleaner place in which to live.
