WE had almost forgotten how to celebrate. But after years of heartache York can acclaim a set of sporting heroes again.

In a thrilling match against Hunslet, York City Knights clinched the match, and the LHF National League Two title.

It was a glorious moment for the fans, coming just three years after professional rugby league in York seemed to have perished.

These have been bleak years for sports fans. York City won its life-or-death struggle only to have the joy tainted by relegation from the Football League. Days after City was saved, the Wasps foundered. York's proud rugby league history looked to have come to an ignominious end.

But the fans thought otherwise. As soon as the Wasps were pronounced dead, they determined that rugby league would be reborn.

All their belief and dedication was rewarded yesterday. Years of Wasps heartache and misery were wiped out with Lee Paterson's nerveless penalty.

Our congratulations go to the players, the staff and the fans of York City Knights, whose self-belief made the dream come true.

This is an inspirational success story, proving that seemingly insurmountable setbacks can be overcome on the road to glory. There are signs that York City's fortunes are reviving too. We hope this marks the beginning of a great new era for York sport.
