WOODHOUSE Grange won the Hunters York Premier League Cup for the sixth time when they beat Heworth by 49 runs.

Grange had lost to Dunnington in the two previous finals, but lifted the trophy at the third attempt.

Batting first on a fast track and speedy outfield at Sheriff Hutton Bridge, Grange, who won in the league the previous day against Heworth, suffered an early setback when Richard Bowling removed overseas man Kahn Jowsey for four.

Nick Hadfield and Simon Dwyer added 53 until the latter became a second Bowling victim when he was caught by Colin de Grandhomme. Hadfield was within eighth runs of creating a new record for the most runs in the competition in a season when he was removed for 62 by Jamie Ulliott at 107. This paved the way for a decisive century stand which tipped the scales in Grange's favour.

Jonathon Bean struck a vigorous 83 in partnership with skipper Mike Burdett which added 105 runs. Bean's impressive innings, coupled with a fine catch in the outfield later in the day, earned him the Ian Reed Trophy as 'Man of the Match'. Burdett reached his own half century and remained unbeaten with 53 when his side's innings ended on 239-4.

Heworth made a sound start to their reply as they moved to 52 before Mike Taylor was run out in a mix up with his partner Dave Simpson.

Only a single had been added when Jowsey got the better of fellow overseas man de Grandhomme, who was caught by Steve Burdett. The best stand of the innings followed as Simpson and Richard Bowling appeared to be setting their side on course for victory but their alliance was terminated at 137 when Bowling was bowled by Richard Steel.

Simpson was also putting the seasonal run aggregate of 296 held by Simon Kellett under pressure when he was trapped lbw by Nick Hadfield for 67 leaving him on 284 runs for the season, 12 runs short of Kellett and five runs short of his captor's 289.

With Simpson's dismissal, Heworth's challenge melted away as Steele claimed 3-22 and wicketkeeper Mike Burdett bagged three victims to have Heworth all out for 190, with Andy Parkinson providing a late order flurry.
