It is one of the most prestigious events in the sporting calendar, enjoying days of live TV coverage.
The benefits - priceless publicity and extra tourism revenue generated in the depth of winter - are nothing to balk at.
The fact that York has pocketed the championship for the fifth year running, despite the uncertainty over the future of the Barbican Centre, demonstrates that snooker has taken this city to its heart.
The feeling is mutual.
