AFTER becoming the York Senior League's second team to win the National Village Cricket Cup at Lord's the previous day, Sheriff Hutton Bridge were brought down to earth yesterday.
The players were shattered after their arrival back home in the early hours of the morning.
They soon found themselves floundering at Woodhouse Grange in the premier division when they slipped to 49-5.
Skipper Paul Scaling then came to the rescue with his best innings of the season as he and Peter Crowder added 141 for the seventh wicket to create a new record for the premier division.
Scaling had reached 83 when he was dismissed off the final ball of the innings while Crowder contributed an unbeaten 53 to the eventual total of 190-6.
Nick Hadfield and Kahn Jowsey then got the Woodhouse reply off to a good start before Jowsey fell for 45. Jonathon Bean continued the good work until he was out for 40.
But Hadfield was able to mastermind a seven-wicket win as he made an unbeaten 87 which took his seasonal total to 944 and left him requiring 60 runs from the final two games to beat Grange's previous best aggregate of 1,003 made by Colin Johnson in the old division one in 1993.
