THE summer is not quite over, but the inquest has already begun.
Despite Ascot, York's crucial tourist industry has been hit by a slump in visitor numbers. Even the last big Bank Holiday weekend failed to bring in the crowds, and answers are inevitably being sought.
The aftershock of the London bombings has been blamed. York might have hoped to attract those travellers fearful of staying in the capital, but it seems as though terrorism has hit tourism across the board.
A general slump in consumer confidence is likely to emerge as the most significant reason. York retailers and visitor attractions can only hope for a quick return of the feelgood factor.
