HAVE people realised what the proposed changes to our refuse collections actually mean ('That's a wheelie bad idea', August 29)?
Firstly the "normal" collection goes to once a fortnight.
The recycle boxes which are now emptied once a fortnight will be emptied once a month, and the proposed green wheelie bins will again be emptied once a month (this is fine in summer, but unnecessary in winter)
This means those of us who use the green kerbside boxes (which are now full by the end of a week) already have to store excess paper, glass and cans until the fortnightly collection, so a monthly collection will become a nightmare because not everyone has a car to take the excess waste to the tip.
If the green bins are for garden waste, will it be used to make compost? Will selling this compost not go towards the cost of collecting the waste?
Could the same apply to the current kerbside collection of green waste?
I feel let down by this council, as I have not been asked for my views concerning the introduction of a fortnightly collection.
Have any trials in York been carried out to see if the system will work?
