READERS' comments about the council's new system for collecting rubbish have been interesting.
I believe there are many flaws in the system. For example, there are no plans to collect cardboard or plastic bottles from households - a huge source of waste. However, it is also clear something has to be done about the amount of rubbish we send to landfill sites. This has been increasing for decades and the time for action has arrived.
We will now be able to recycle paper, glass and cans as well as having kitchen and garden waste collected. This is an excellent start and I look forward to further developments and collections soon.
Many have been worrying about only having black wheelie bins emptied fortnightly. We are a family of five and our wheelie bin is only usually about half full. Admittedly this takes some effort - separating out paper, glass, cans, plastic bottles and cardboard, having a compost bin and using washable nappies - but with some effort, all of us will be able to reduce the amount of rubbish that we produce.
