IT was a case of a family rod duel in the Ralph Cobb memorial angling match at the Oaktree Leisure lake on Bank Holiday Monday.
An impressive entry of 75 took part to raise funds for the Alzheimers Society. Owners Tony and Julie Bowes donated the fishery free for the day and the event, run by Mick and Lin Brind, of Acomb Tackle, raised nearly £500.
The top of the prize list resulted in a father v son tussle between Woodthorpe-based Steve and Thomas Hodson.
At the weigh-in it was youth that triumphed over experience with teenager Tom winning with an excellent 62lb 6oz. Drawn on peg 45 on Pond One the rising star alternated meat and pellet for small carp of all varieties.
Dad Steve found himself on peg one on Pond Two and despite his best efforts could not repeat last year's winning haul taken in the same event.
Despite the distractions of hot dogs and beer, delivered to every angler at their peg by Lin Brind, he managed to put together a net of carp scaling 58lb 4oz, which were taken on the same tactics as Hodson junior.
Others: Brian Pallister 49-4-0, Tom Bainbridge 43-4-0, Ken Barley 40-0-0 and Pete Mills 35-0-0.
Roger Holmes continued his great run of form at Langwith Lakes at Heslington, scoring his second win of a productive weekend.
A field of 50 fished the Monday open on Kevin's and Bethany's Lakes where the small carp were in feeding mood.
Holmes fished from peg ten on Bethany's where he targeted the margins of the far-side islands with pellet for 76lb 7oz of carp to 3lb taken at 12 metres.
York-based Dean Smith had to settle for second place behind his rival and friend. Enjoying the company of his travelling partner from peg 11 he will not have enjoyed the result so much as his 65lb bag fell short of the mark.
Others: Danny Bennet 63-6-0, Norman Dixon 55-12-0, Andy Dargue 54-6-0 and Tony Dinsdale 53-5-0.
