Oaks on the rise: UP, up and away was the clarion call at The Oaks GC.
The Aughton-based club have been promoted to division one of the York Union Scratch Division after a fine triumph in a play-off over Malton and Norton at York GC.
The pivotal victory was that of +1 player Michelle Smith, who beat her fellow Yorkshire county team-mate Emma Duggleby 3 and 2. Craig Johnson also won his match, while Tony Raper halved his, with Philip Dobson the lone Oaks' loser.
Society winner
A SILVER jubilee was celebrated by the Duke of York Golfing Society when it staged a commemorative competition and dinner at Malton and Norton GC.
A total of 32 played golf, with several past members also attending.
The Jubilee prize was won by Malton and Norton's Vic Thornton, a former member of the Society, on count-back from Dave Gummery after both totalled 40 points. Thornton triumphed with a better back six.
Bobbing along
AGE was no barrier to Bob Sharrock, who won the first round of Pike Hills' Fearn Cup.
In the competition for the best two from three rounds score, 12-handicapper Sharrock won with a net 60. It was a considerable achievement as Sharrock shot a gross score of 72, less than his age of 75. David Broxup was second with a net 62 playing off 18.
Dream double
ALLERTHORPE Park's August midweek medal was won by Iain Charlton with a net 63. He also posted the best gross of 73.
In division two, Philip Thirtle triumphed with the best net of 74 and also had the best gross of 94. He was eight shots ahead of his nearest rival.
Holiday lift
EWAN MacPhail edged home on count-back from Victor Fielder with a five-under-par net 67 in Fulford's Bank Holiday extra medal. Geoff Hawkins and Mike Rudd won the Arthur Brown Trophy with a net 61, two clear of the rest.
Sue's honour
YORK GC's Sue Milner is to become the Yorkshire Ladies County Golf Association vice-captain in 2006 leading to the county captaincy a year later.
