IN 1993 the Mercia Cinema Society published The Cinemas Of York in a format we called "cheap and cheerful" - that is, typescript, photo-copied and comb-bound.
The edition was successfully received and has now sold out.
The original research was in a 1984 dissertation by Peter Wrenn, and this was adapted and copy-edited by Kate Taylor, the Mercia Cinema Society chairman. We no longer issue publications in this format so we have taken the opportunity to revise, enlarge, and up-date this subject, and publish in true book format, as with all our present-day output. We expect to publish it in November.
I should be interested to hear from ex-members of staff of the long-closed cinemas, and if they care to lend photographs or other material, it will be copied and returned the following day.
If used, of course it will be acknowledged to the owner.
