THERE was a carnival of runs at Stamford Bridge where the home team's star Lorenzo Ingram sailed past his fellow West Indian batsman Collis King's York Senior Cricket League record of 1,668 runs in a season.

King set the mark for Stillington in division four in 1996 but has been overhauled by Ingram who needed 77 to pass the record at the start of the divison one match against Carlton Towers.

Ingram moved effortlessly to 75 before passing his idol's total when he launched a massive six over the pavilion off Oral Blackford. Ingram continued to hit the ball to all corners of the ground and was matched all the way by Matt Beckett who, after seeing his illustrious partner play on for 151, moved to an unbeaten 88 as Bridge posted a formidable 285-3.

The Stamford pitch's reputation as a batsman's paradise was evident as Carlton Towers launched their reply. Towers found early runs from Jonathon Dilks (32), Abhay Sharma (53) and Jamie Pocklington before a fine unbroken partnership between Mark Holmes, who made 90no and Glen Roberts (35no) saw Carlton reach their target for the loss of five wickets.

In a remarkable coincidence, the league's record for the most wickets in a season was broken on the same day when Hemingbrough's Asim Butt erased the record of 90 wickets taken by Cawood's John Gibson in division five in 1992.

Butt's record-breaking with the ball was preceded by some devastating batting by his team-mates as Whitkirk's bowlers took a battering. The home side dismissed Asim Zubair for 59 and Kashif Mahmood for 26 as the visitors reached 114-2 but they then suffered an onslaught as Nathan Briggs hit 115no and Imran Malik 109no as the pairing added an unbroken 208 which saw Hemingbrough to 322-2.

After the break, Butt soon got the three wickets to take him past Gibson's total and eventually emerged with 6-59 to reach 94 wickets with one game to play. Mahmood gave sound support as he took 4-59.

Whitkirk skipper Andy Peirson carried his bat for 100no in his side's total of 184 all out.

Thirsk's Des Wyrill has enjoyed a career spanning more than 40 years in top league cricket which has seen him break records in the York Senior League, Yorkshire League and Bradford League, as well as scoring almost 400 runs for the Yorkshire over- 50s county side.

He marked his return to his old stamping-ground at Clifton Park by hitting an unbeaten 107 which both celebrated his 60th birthday earlier in the week and steered his side to a good draw against York.

The home side posted a big score as Jason English hit 105, Ben Hough an unbeaten 88 and Tom Bartram 39 to take them to 251-5. Thirsk's 18-year-old fast bowler Neil Laidlaw claimed his 50th wicket of the season as he took 3-47. Wyrill's batting support came from Mark Wainwright, who made 43 as Thirsk pocketed full batting points at 200-5.
