I have great sympathy with the many letters complaining about packaging of goods. Whenever possible we avoid buying products that have unnecessary packaging.
Many other countries have had laws that control the level of packaging for many years. Indeed UK firms often have to reduce packaging for their exports to comply with these laws.
And what do we have in the UK? Earlier this year the Government finally completed a voluntary agreement with "big business" to limit the amount of packaging. Will this be effective? Because it is voluntary it may be up to us to ensure that big companies live up to their promises.
Perhaps it is time to refuse to accept this packaging. Protection of the environment demands a reduction and council tax payers should not have to pay for the massive extra landfill costs packaging causes.
